LumiPlay

Projection toy for open-ended indoor play in limited spaces

Designed by Belle PS Chen - 陳品亘

LumiPlay is designed to create an open-ended play experience for children in homes with limited indoor spaces, a ubiquitous problem in Glasgow and beyond. Inspired by childrencentred and open-ended design ideologies, this handheld projection toy is designed through an iterative process, which includes mechanism selection, play adaptation, and optical refinements.

LumiPlay utilises lighting components, as light does not take up any physical space and provides sensory interaction. During play, black dry-erase markers are used to colour negative space on film slides. This free-hand play allows the reusable slides to be easily wiped clean, with child-safe formulae that are washable and odourless. To create diversity in the play interactions, tinted film slides with a colour gradient are also designed. The film box with four slots enables mixing-and-matching of various slide combinations, allowing children’s creativity to shine through.

By minimising the spatial constraints of play in small indoor spaces, LumiPlay empowers children to affect their environments with their own creativity and playfulness.
