Bio-luminescent algae light

Designed by Robbie Graham

Through the combination of algae, sea water and chaotic motion, this kinetic sculpture uses a double pendulum to turn pure mechanical energy into blue light. An avant-garde product, hand crafted using brass-treated steel. By growing algae in this contemporary aquarium, users can develop a symbiotic relationship with one of nature’s many wonders and transform their interior spaces with this luxury atmospheric light. By creating an artificial saltwater solution, these algae can be sustained indefinitely in a small tank, provided they have access to light, air and nutrients.

This blue light is the result of the natural phenomena of bioluminescence found in Pyrocystis Fusiformis - a species of saltwater algae. During the daytime, these algae photosynthesise and release oxygen like plants. However, by night, they glow a gorgeous blue when subjected to motion or agitation in the water. By doing so, these micro-organisms highlight their surroundings momentarily and bring a moment of mindfulness to one’s environment.
