Goated

Tunable tension climbing shoe for improved comfort and performance

Designed by Gregor Harley

For optimum performance, climbing shoes apply high tension to the plantar fascia and tendo calcaneus to aid power transfer through the toes. Many climbers struggle to find wellfitting shoes and either wear cramped shoes to compensate for a lack of tension, causing pain in the forefoot; or have too much tension, inducing pain in the Achilles. Goated shoes tackle these issues using an adjustable strap to apply tension. This allows climbers to tension their shoes according to foot strength, climbing ability, and the style and difficulty of the climbing they are doing. This reduces pain and improves performance. 100,000 pairs of climbing shoes go to landfill every year in the UK. The Goated shoe is ‘designed for demanufacture’, with a construction that comes apart when heated, using hot melt stitching and adhesives. Once worn out, the shoe is returned to the manufacturer, where it is dismantled and sorted into its constituent parts to be composted, recycled and down-cycled as appropriate.
